Tidbits to Remember When Searching for Your Next Construction Job

It’s a tradesman-friendly hiring market right now, for sure.  And that’s a good thing. It means skilled tradespeople are busy because construction companies are busy.

People who work in the trades are looking for stable, good-paying jobs with benefits, just like everyone in the labor market. So how can tradespeople find their next great job with a top-shelf construction company?

Remember, you’re doing due diligence on your next job opportunity and your next employer just like they will be doing with you. As the Harvard Business Review points out in a recent article:

Job interviews are a two-way process — you’re interviewing your potential boss and employer as much as they’re interviewing you. After all, you don’t just want any job — you want the right job

This post will discuss three tips for tradespeople to keep top of mind when searching for their next awesome job. So what’s the first step?

Prioritize

We don’t want to be captain obvious here, but you need to decide exactly what you want regarding the perfect skilled trades job opportunity. The hiring market is very candidate-friendly, so your chances of finding a great job are excellent.

Set your priorities realistically, and have a Plan B ready to go. This is so just in case you can’t find the absolute perfect opportunity, you can still get close. As we point out in a previous post, your “perfect job” metrics should include:

  • Competitive Salaries
  • Non-Salary Benefits Like Healthcare and Paid PTO
  • Exceptional Workplace Culture
  • Work-Lifestyle Perks and Benefits Like Company Vehicles and Flexible Schedules When Possible

Use Your Network, But Recognize It Has Limitations

As a professional recruiting and staffing agency, we always recommend that tradespeople use their networks when considering a new job. But personal networks have their limitations. These include a lack of firsthand knowledge of the prospective employer, limited exposure to a broad spectrum of hiring companies, etc.

So when your network isn’t finding you the right opportunity, what should you do?
